The Jets traveled to Riverside for round 7 of the SCAFL season for a rematch with the Beachside Sharks, and fell short of victory by 3 points in yet another nail-biter between these two sides. The Jets struggled early as an already depleted team was hit again in the first few minutes by the loss of half back Seb Aguiari with a calf injury. The Jets struggled to fill the holes as the Sharks did as they pleased, and the half time score showed the Jets down by 20 points. But for some stellar defensive work from the backs and midfielders, the difference could have been much more.
The 3rd quarter started badly with the Sharks goaling in the first few minutes, and the signs were beginning to become ominous. But suddenly, with their backs to the wall, the Jets found their rhythm, and the entire team lifted it’s work rate. They were inspired by guys like Andy Treanor who started well at full forward before moving into the ruck and dominating the stoppages; captain Qemal Shaholli who set the example with his fierce tackling and desire for the ball; and VC Kelly Nelson racking up possessions and sending the ball forward with regularity. Meanwhile the Jets defenders got on top, led superbly by full back KB Nelson who had some tough opponents all day. Mike Hertstein continued his great form at half back, while midfielder Ben Vadasz worked tirelessly throughout.
Unfortunately the Jets would rue some missed opportunities in the dying minutes, as well as the slow start. Despite dominating the majority of the second half, the Jets would fall short of victory by 3 points, but not before staging a gallant comeback attempt.
We are looking to bounce back strongly next week against Riverside...
