Jets retain the Jon Egan Cup
Tuesday 17th of March, 2009

The OC Jets went to 2-0 in the SCAFL season after a convincing win over Riverside in round 2 last Sunday. While the scoreboard reflects a somewhat one-sided result, the Raiders played some good football and definitely had their moments. In the end they were overun by the Jets experience and superioir numbers, but the Raiders showed once again how far they have come in the last couple of years, and will definitely win some games this season.

The Jets were missing a couple of star players from the previous week, but such is the depth at the moment that other players were lining up to take their place. Captain Qemal Shaholli put in a stellar performance for the second week in a row, this time taking best-on-ground honors and relishing being freed of the tagging role he played the previous week. OC veteran and Jets president KB Nelson played one of his best games in recent memory, which is quite an achievement for a player who gives 100% every week. KB started a lot of plays from the full back line, at one stage following the ball and running the entire length of the field to kick a rare goal for the Jets key defender. The ruck duo of Sean Nievaart and Andy Treanor again combined to dominate the stoppages, and the center clearance taps they provided to the midfielders saw many goals scored with only one or two posessions out of the middle. New recruit Shane Donaldson played an important role in his first game for the club, stepping in covering the absence of Wetherall on the wing beautifully.

The Jets next travel to Riverside to take on the LA Swans on March 22 in what could be called a danger game. The Swans have shown plenty of promise over the first two rounds, and at full strength will be a serious challenge to a Jets side that will again be missing some key players. Stay tuned...
